Abstract: Although retiring from academia involves many considerations beyond simply choosing an appropriate age at which to retire, one issue is paramount: whether the faculty member feels satisfied with what he or she has accomplished during his or her working years. Much of the negative emotional and psychological impact of impending retirement stems from an appraisal of one's contributions as being less than hoped for. In some cases, there is a sense of stagnation (having failed to achieve in one's career a meaningful body of work), conceptualized by Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. (Cf.: Yukiko Inoue-Smith’s article The Psychology of Retirement: A “Can’t Let Go” Syndrome. The Journal of Retirement, 5(2) 2017, p.10). This annotated bibliography is the product of a “Can’t Let Go” Syndrome.
